EU Championship Recap

The European Championships were in full swing this weekend, at ESL Studios in Cologne, Germany. Six teams came out and competed for the $50,000 prize pool, but the real battle was in the semi finals, not the finals. Two teams would come out of this gauntlet: the two finalist teams would be the teams that earn their way to Atlanta, Georgia this January, to fight for over 1.4 million dollars at The Smite World Championships.

The first matchup on Saturday was Aquila (the team that came from the Challenger Cup via the Wildcards) vs Cloud9 HyperX. Cloud9 is definitely a crowd favorite, and game 1 looked like they deserved that favorite title. This was Aquila’s first LAN, and the jitters were showing: uncharacteristic missed abilities and ultimates were frequent, and Cloud 9 took the first game relatively easily.

Game 2, Cloud9 was looking very strong as well, but Aquila had seemed to come into themselves. PrettyPrime, Aquila’s mid laner, was on his signature vulcan, and was doing well. Cloud9 had taken charge though, barrelled down the battlefield, and killed all three phoenixes. Cloud9 headed into the base and aggressed onto the titan.
They couldn’t kill it though--in one of the most impressive defensive displays Smite eSports has ever seen, PrettyPrime and KanyeLife pushed back 3 waves of fire minions and defended a titan that was below 10% health. From there, you could see the surge of confidence the team had. Aquila went on to quietly sneak a fire giant while Cloud 9 was out of position, Repikas the jungler earned a quadra kill, and in one of the largest turnarounds this writer has ever seen, Aquila stole the victory for game 2.

Game 3 was all momentum: Aquila was riding high on their incredible come back and Cloud9 was feeling quite the opposite, and the third match went uneventfully as Aquila took the win and moved on to semi finals where they would face #1 seed Fnatic.

Aquila’s match up against Fnatic was played on Sunday, and as it was the determining factor of who goes to World’s, was a best out of 5. Aquila is a team built around the synergy between their mid laner PrettyPrime and solo laner Confrey. When these players get mages, they can combine to become a single character and run the game, and that’s what they did. With PrettyPrime on Ra and Confrey on NuWa, plenty of set up for Ra ults and beams were made, and the enemy was blown up. Aquila takes game 1 in a display of full teamwork.

Fnatic are a team that usually beat people based on their individual talent, and this was a game that definitely showcased that. Xaliea’s Bakasura against Confrey’s surprise pick Hel was a slaughter early on, and once Funballer’s Freya came online, the carry job was tossed to him. Shadownightmare’s Ra finished clean with a 6/0/12 slash line, and Fnatic earned a dominant victory.

Game 3 was won in the picks and bans phase. Fnatic got their ideal line up, and was incredible. Frostiak: Ymir, Shadownightmare: Isis, Xaliea: Merc, Funballer: Anhur, Halfdevil: Athena. Aquila could not handle this team on their best picks, and lost the game with over a 10,000 gold deficit.

Knowing that this one was a must win for them, Aquila pulled out all the stops. They took a gamble on Confrey’s Hel, a pick that was unknown before this LAN and the first time he played it, didn’t do too well. With the addition of PrettyPrime’s Isis, the mage rage was in full effect, and they were able to turn the series around. This game wound up being won by Aquila as strongly as Fnatic won the previous match, the end result being over 10,000 gold the way of Aquila.

Game 5. This game determined which team would be headed to compete for an incredible prize pool, a trip to America, and the chance to play the game in front of thousands of people. Both teams were in this to win it, and you could tell from the looks on the player’s faces. This game was closer than the rest for the majority of the match. Each kill was answered with a kill either in the same skirmish or in a different lane--both teams understanding how important it was to keep this game together. The game turned on a Gold Fury play initiated by Fnatic. Aquila answered, fought, and went ahead and took the objective, and that was the beginning. Aquila continued looking for towers and objectives and just before the 25 minute mark took down the titan to claim their victory and secure their trip to the Smite World Championships.

On the other side of the bracket, the first round match was between SK Gaming and Team Solomid. Team Solomid was boasting a new coach in ShadowQ (previously of team dignitas, definitely a worthwhile pickup) and a change to the hunter role, with Zimpstar, their previous coach, playing that position. This was a fairly even matchup, but TSM was ever so slightly favorited.

The first match was tied for over 30 minutes. A long contestation over gold fury went the way of SK around 35 minutes The team takes that minor victory, and proceeded to extend the lead over the entirety of the game. Not surprisingly, Realzx, the hunter, rising to the occasion and with the help of his team commanded this game and earned the win.

Game 2 was eerily similar. Team Solomid, being the strong team they are, keep the game tied for 30+ minutes. Unfortunately for them though, Realzx again just plays out of his mind, earns incredible kills that allow his team to capitalize, take the win and take the series, 2 games to none.

SK Gaming vs. Mortality was another sweep for the LANimals that are SK. Game one, SK Gaming found themselves up by 10K gold, fire giant, and a phoenix by 18 minutes. With kills 13-4, there was nothing that Mortality could do, besides look forward onto game 2.

The second game was as clean as game one, for SK Gaming. Again the team double Mortality’s kills and take the victory. Mortality does put on a nice defensive set to deter SK’s first shot at winning, but SK regroup and take the titan just 5 minutes later. SK still functioning on all cylinders, this team was incredibly hungry for a trip to Worlds. All towers and Phoenixes were destroyed by SK before the 20 minute mark, and with Fire Giant the guys from SK took game 3 and in turn, the ticket to Atlanta.

With the teams already qualified for the Smite World Championships, the Finals had a bit of a relaxed feel to them, especially after the adrenaline fueled SK domination and the Aquila turn arounds.

The finals were a best out of three, and SK Gaming looked amazing for the first game. Leading by over 10 kills and 10k gold for the majority of the game, around the 35 minute mark Aquila came and stole out a fire giant, allowing them to pressure SK’s phoenixes. After a few quick burst kills from Repikas’ Kali, the game was completely turned around, and Aquila took game one in an explosive finish.

Game 2 had a much different look, Aquila winning 15-1 by 15 minutes in, SK did not look like the team they did earlier against this Aquila line up. Kanyelife got to play his spectacular Ymir, secure kills for his team, and really take care of business in the finals against SK Gaming.

+++

The European Championships were an incredible set of games to watch. SK Gaming fresh off of their boot camp at their team’s HQ in Cologne came out to play, and dominated everyone they wanted to. Realz is an absolute monster on LAN, and Maniakk came out with a bigger, updated godpool, and made a very strong case for most improved player. SK earned their title as “Lanimals”.

Aquila, an amateur team not even involved in the pro league, fought their way through the Wildards and through the more difficult end of the bracket to win the entire EU Championship as well as secure their trip to Atlanta, Georgia to compete for the incredible 1.4+ million dollar prize pool. Emotions ran high and the competition ran even higher.

Zitat von YoDa;59514:
NA ist so lame, CoG Show *gähn*.

This past weekend at the Cobb Energy Center was the stage for the 2014 Smite North American Regional Championships. Six teams gathered in Atlanta, Georgia to compete for their shot at over a million dollars in January. Only two teams could qualify for Worlds, so emotions and adrenaline were running high. With so much on the line, the tournament was split up into two separate days. The first day featured two best-of-three- competitions: Team Dignitas vs. Fat Chunks Assemble, and Complexity vs. The Rambozos.

The Saturday started off with the former contest, and Team Dignitas took the stage against their fifth seed SPL counterparts Fat Chunks. Team Dignitas was a heavy favorite going into this matchup, but with strong players on the Fat Chunks’ team like Aror (support) and Cyclonespin (solo) coupled with the live setting of a LAN, anything was possible.

Fat Chunks never commanded a lead in the first match, but they played strong. Aror had drafted his signature Fenrir support, and Cyclonespin played a mean Vulcan in the solo lane. Despite the good play, Dignitas proved to be too strong in the first game, and took the lead and the victory in a 42 minute contest.

The follow up was a much stronger performance from Dignitas. Dig came out of the gates strong and hot, and this time the match lasted less than 30 minutes. Fat Chunks moved away from their typical strategy and had Aror played Bacchus--still an aggressive support, but not quite the over agression and max-offense that we are used to seeing. It didn't work out, and Team Dignitas moved on to the next round.\

On the bottom side of the bracket, Complexity faced off against Rambozos. Complexity definitely a little more favored than Rambozos going into this one; Complexity was the third seed in the SPL while The Rambozos earned their entry via the Wildcards.

Despite everything, Rambozos actually lead the first match for the first 15 minutes. The wildcard team looked a lot better on LAN this weekend than they have all throughout the challenger cup and the Wildcard matches. Strong play and leadership were evident, but at the end of the day, experience reigned supreme. Complexity took both matches, and although they might have been close early on, the SPL team came out on top and finished the series 2-0.

Sunday, tension was high as teams knew that the winners of that day’s matches would be heading to World’s, and the losers would be watching from home. Everyone was on full alert, and the matches were far from a disappointment.

The first match of the day on Sunday was Team Dignitas vs. Cognitive Red. These two teams are both more than capable, and while Cog Red might have been the favorite from the outside looking in, private scrims showed the opposite. Team Dignitas were confident as always, and jumped into the matches fresh off of their recent round 1 victory ready to fight. All of that pretext matters little as soon as the minions spawn, however.

Cognitive Red came out of the gates swinging and made quick work of Team Dignitas. It was a best of 5 series, but The boys from CogR only needed 3; all three games were over rather quickly. Team Dignitas had no response for the double hog (solo lane with hog alongside jungle) and fell behind quickly as Cognitive Red had full control over Dig’s jungle. The series was over after the first three matches, and CogRed made their way to the finals and earned their ticket to the Smite World Championship

Complexity vs. Cognitive Gaming was the second set, and these games proved to be just as exciting as the rest of the day. Cognitive Prime looked outstanding in the first match, and even with some secret strategies (Ah Muzen Cab + Odin), Complexity just couldn’t handle them, and Cog took that first game rather swiftly. Not willing to give up without a fight, Complexity came into the second game and really turned up, adapting well and came around to win the second game with fervor. Complexity played well in the rest of the matches, but Cognitive Gaming proved to be a little too strong for them, and the second seeded Cognitive Gaming wound up takinig the series in 4 games, 3-1.

With the two Cognitive teams heading to World’s this set the stage for finals. Finals would be a contest (best of 3) between the two Cognitive teams to see who would be crowned the North American Champion, as well as an extra $15,000 (2nd place earning 10k, 1st play earning 25k.)

The finals proved to be very exciting, stretching the full three games as both Cognitive teams looked very strong. After a long match three, however, Cognitive Red proved to be the victorious one, and sent their sister team home a little less rich.

The Cobb Energy Center certainly had a fitting name this weekend, as two days of smite action definitely proved to be one of the more energetic events of the year. All of this build up is just the beginning, though! World’s is just around the corner on January 9th, and we will have 8 teams there competing for over 1.4 MILLION dollars. Join us live in Atlanta, Georgia as we see who is the best Smite team in the entire world.

Week 1 Highlights
Thursday, May 14thTitan vs London Conspiracy

Right before the start of the Summer Split, Titan had a role swap between their Solo laner and Hunter. Captain of the team, Ataraxia, who played Hunter last Split took to the field as their Solo laner. The swap is working well for the team so far as they swept the series 2 – 0 over their opponents, London Conspiracy. Ataraxia went 5/3/10 on Neith in Game 1, whileConfrey – the teams new Hunter went 7/2/8 on Rama. In game 2, Ataraxia went with a more traditional Solo lane god – Chaac – going 3/1/6. Confrey finished game 2 6/2/6 on Medusa, leading his team in player damage.
Saturday, May 16thAFK Gaming vs Team SoloMid

In a rematch of the finals from the SPL Spring Finals LAN it was Team SoloMid who would take game 1. Captain and Hunter of TSM – Snoopy had an amazing game on Rama landing almost every snipe, leading his team in player damage and ending the game 9/1/7. AFKshowed signs of life in game 2, turning the tides in their favor to eventually end the series 1 – 1. AFK’s Allied and CycloneSpin had 7 kills a piece, leading their team in player damage and to victory. These are arguably the best 2 teams in North America right now and an even Head to Head record may put them in a tiebreak position at the end of the Split.
Sunday, May 17thEpsilon Esports vs Upcoming Stars

Epsilon Esports is the top team coming out EU’s Challenger Cup and in their SPL debut they managed to impress everyone with the amount of talent that this team possesses. One player in particular, Epsilons Jungler – Adapting showcased his skill going 9/1/6 on Fenrir in Game 1 and 11/0/13 on Bellona in game 2. Epsilon’s competition increases in the coming weeks, but they are already starting to make a name for themselves. We’ll see if they can keep up the momentum in Week 2 as they take on London Conspiracy.
Sunday, May 17thCognitive Gaming vs Legion of Carrots

Closing out Week 1 featured yet another team coming out of the Challenger Cup – Legion of Carrots up against Cognitive Gaming. Season ticket holders had Cognitive Gaming winning the set with 78.97% of the vote. But it was Legion of Carrots who would ultimately take the series. Legions Solo laner – saltmachine – who was subbing for WellPlaid played a huge role in the teams success going 6/1/5 on Tyr in game 1. Legions Hunter – PandaCat – playing Rama in game 2 helped lead his team to victory going 5/3/3 leading the game in player damage.

Week 2 Highlights
Thursday, May 21
Upcoming Stars vs TRIG Esports

Never a dull moment in the SPL and the first match of Week 2 didn’t disappoint. TRIG Esports, who were the number one seed out of EU going into the Spring Finals, took game 1 as much of us expected. TRIG’s jungler, QvoFred went 10/0/14 on Hun Batz while the rest of his team only allowed the Stars to get 3 kills the entire game. Game 2 played to a much different drum, this time with Stars getting 27 kills on their opponents and with a huge part played by Stars hunter – iRens (who went 12/4/12 on Neith) they were able to walk away from Week 2 with their 1st win of the season.

Saturday, May 23Epsilon Esports vs London Conspiracy

Saturday kicked off with London Conspiracy taking on Epsilon Esports. Game 1 went the way of London Conspiracy, who put down a beating on their opponents; LDNC’s Hunter –Shaggyshenk went 6/0/7 on Rama leading his team in player damage and to victory. Game 2, Epsilon had their revenge and we’re able to split the series 1 – 1 after jungler – Adapting‘s Bellona (11/1/15) made another appearance and helped aid the win. Epsilons mid laner went without a death on Janus, ending the game 5/0/21.

Sunday, May 24Legion of Carrots vs AFK Gaming

The final match of Week 2 had everyone on the edge of their seats. Both Legion and AFKwere playing with a sub – Legion’s WellPlaid subbed for saltmachine in the solo lane; AFK’s samshrew subbed for Allied in the Hunter lane. AFK, after winning the Spring Finals were the favored team to win but Legion was able to take game 1 off of the Spring champions. Legions Mid lane, ADUR0 went 8/3/12 on Isis while hunter PandaCat went 4/0/13 on Medusa, securing their game 1 victory. In game 2 both teams had their full starting rosters and things went a bit differently, this time the win going to AFK. Allied, back in the Hunter role went 10/0/12 on Xbalanque, playing a huge part in their only win in Week 2.
